Games play an important role in education, as they allow the development of various skills and abilities in students, promoting their learning and participation in class. In this context, problems in attention, problem solving and memory have been found within the “Armando Pareja Coronel” Educational Unit in the area of initial education II. Therefore, the purpose of the research is to determine how symbolic play influences the development of cognitive ability in children in sublevel II. The methodology applied is documentary research, which through the analysis of information from reliable sources provides broader knowledge on the subject, and has descriptive and field research that allowed the collection of essential data for the research. As part of the methodology, a non-experimental design and a mixed approach were used. With a sample of 20 students, 20 parents and a teacher, a survey was used and direct observation of the children as a research technique. Positive results were obtained, since it was evident that a large part of the children who participated in symbolic play activities achieved an optimal development of skills such as imagination, problem solving and abstract thinking; thus, it was concluded that symbolic play provides significant learning in the education of children in addition to greatly favoring the development of cognitive ability, generating better performance within the classroom.es_ES
