This review is a practical component for a complexive examination, deals with the issue of the importance and use of germplasm banks as sources of genes for the genetic improvement of plant species, with the aim of preserving certain plant species through these banks. Germplasm, being necessary to conserve their value and improve the use of plant genetic resources. Germplasm banks are sites for preserving biological material, who see objective is the long-term conservation of biodiversity; that is, living, reproducible plant material that transcends time and survives destructive events. They are also considered enclosures designed to prevent the genetic diversity of cultivated and wild plants from being lost forever. To carry out this analysis, we proceeded to collect bibliographic information from books, magazines, newspapers, scientific articles, web pages, presentations, congresses, technical manuals and expert judgment by virtual means. The information obtained was captured by means of analysis, synthesis and summary techniques, in order for the reader to know the importance of the use of germplasm banks for the conservation of plant species. At the end of the work, it was obtained as a result that the objective of this activity is the conservation of the diversity of the native species and varieties of Ecuador, since many are being lost due to various factors such as: the effect of climate change, changes in eating habits, the destruction of natural ecosystems, natural disasters, the substitution of native varieties for improvement and the demands of the market, which cause genetic erosion or loss of biodiversity.es_ES
