dc.descriptionThe pitahaya (Hylocereus spp) is a Cactaceae species that presents great nutritional and commercial potential and currently occupies an important space in the agricultural sector. The pitahaya has gained recognition as an exotic fruit, being demanded in markets such as the United States, and several countries in Europe and Asia. In the country, pitahaya (yellow and red) is produced between 12,000 and 15,000 kilos ha-1, the international market being the destination of a large percentage of local production. Thus, this item has great potential for agricultural development, being an alternative for the implementation of an agribusiness for small and medium producers. Given the above, the objective of this bibliographic work was to collect information related to the production, commercialization and development of the pitahaya cultivation in the Ecuadorian coast. The production of pitahaya requires a process with high added value. For producing countries, it is convenient to export high volumes of fruit to supply internal and external demand. This process involves the use of agricultural inputs, investment, logistics process and a greater number of personnel involved in the fruit agribusiness chain. To achieve further expansion of the pitahaya production areas, especially on the Ecuadorian coast, it is necessary to establish an administrative structure for export. Given this, cooperation between government, private or NGO entities and the pitahaya producing sector is necessary to define lines of research focused on genetic improvement, efficient crop management and commercialization, thus allowing the continuous supply of the national and international market. .es_ES

dc.description.abstractLa pitahaya (Hylocereus spp) es una especie de Cactaceae que presenta gran potencial alimenticio y comercial y actualmente ocupa un espacio importante en el sector agrícola. La pitahaya ha ganado reconocimiento como una fruta exótica, siendo exigida en mercados como Estados Unidos, y varios países de Europa y Asia. En el país se produce pitahaya (amarilla y roja) entre 12 000 y 15 000 kilos ha-1, siendo el mercado internacional el destino de un gran porcentaje de la producción local. Así, este rubro presenta un gran potencial para el desarrollo agrario, siendo una alternativa para la implementación de un agronegocio para los pequeños y medianos productores. Ante lo expuesto, el objetivo de este trabajo bibliográfico fue recopilar información relacionada a la producción, comercialización y desarrollo del cultivo de pitahaya en el litoral ecuatoriano. La producción de pitahaya requiere de un proceso con alto valor agregado. Para los países productores es conveniente exportar altos volúmenes de fruta para suplir la demanda interna y externa. Este proceso conlleva el uso de insumos agrícolas, inversión, proceso logístico y una mayor cantidad de personal involucrado en la cadena de agronegocio de la fruta. Para lograr mayor expansión de las áreas de producción de pitahaya, especialmente en el litoral ecuatoriano, es necesario establecer una estructura administrativa para la exportación. Ante esto, la cooperación entre entidades gubernamentales, privadas u ONG y el sector productor de pitahaya es necesario para definir líneas de investigación enfocadas al mejoramiento genético, manejo eficiente del cultivo y comercialización, permitiendo de esta manera abastecer de manera continua el mercado nacional e internacional.es_ES
