Video game addiction is one of the most frequent problems in the child and adolescent population that interferes to a great extent in the academic performance of those who excessively handle these games. This paper describes the case of a 16-year-old high school student from the city of Babahoyo, who maintains difficulties in his school performance, and who in turn spends most of his time playing video games. The objective of the study is to determine how addiction to videogames has affected the academic performance of the evaluated student, using the semi-structured interview, clinical history, direct observation, observation sheets, the primary mental aptitudes questionnaire (MPA), the parental observation questionnaire for the problematic use of video games, and a questionnaire of open questions. The results of the applied psychological tests show that the student maintains his primary mental abilities in a favorable state, while the parental observation test of the problematic use of video games and the answers to the open-ended questionnaire place the patient within a range diagnosis of problematic use of video games. These findings, correlated with the student's speech in the initial interview and clinical history, allow us to establish that the condition of dependence on video games that the student presents has significantly affected his school performance for approximately 5 consecutive months.es_ES
