Passion fruit (Passiflora edulis S.) is a plant native to tropical America. The most widely consumed variety is yellow, with its largest production destined for industry. Many of its properties have been studied in recent years, mainly those related to the type and content of fiber in the fruit. Studies indicate that the passion fruit peel, which represents 52% of the fruit, should not be considered as industrial waste, since its characteristics and properties can be used to obtain new by-products. Given the above, the objective of this bibliographic review was to analyze the operation of the production chain of Passiflora edulis to determine its influence on the economy of Ecuador. In Ecuador, approximately 70% of the fruit destined for the industry is used for the production of juices or concentrates to later be commercialized in the local and foreign markets. The entire agribusiness chain in this area generates a positive socio-economic impact in the areas of influence. However, in the country there is no incentive on the part of government institutions to create policies that establish and enforce the minimum price of support for the cultivation of passion fruit that allows the expansion of production areas. Given this, the sectors involved in the production chain should focus various studies to improve the productivity and commercialization of the fruit. In addition to seeking alternatives that allow added value to the final product, the actors in the passion fruit production and marketing chain will allow for better returns.es_ES
