Nosocomial pneumonia is an infection that is acquired within the hospital, generally after 48 hours. This infection causes the lungs to become inflamed. On many occasions, the alveoli fill with secretions, preventing proper gas exchange. The most vulnerable patients suffering from this disease are those who have just come out of chest surgery, undergoing a mechanical ventilator and finally people who have a low immune system and go to the hospital for any inconvenience. nosocomial pneumonias are not homogeneous in all hospitals and vary depending on the type of hospital, the risk factors of the population attended and the diagnostic methods used. The use of more specific diagnostic techniques, such as the telescoping catheter and bronchoalveolar lavage, and the application of quantitative microbiological cultures have made it possible to identify with greater certainty the causative agents of nosocomial respiratory infections in risk populations such as patients on mechanical ventilation. The diagnosis of nosocomial pneumonia, especially that associated with mechanical ventilation, continues to be an aspect of vital importance and great controversy.es_ES
