dc.description | D. immitis detection techniques have evolved over the years, the oldest is the modified Knott technique, which allows microfilariae to be visualized, however it can give negative results when the microfilariae count is very low, however, in studies involving a large population, it has been used because its costs are low. Serological techniques are the most used, because a certain specificity that allows detecting the parasite, however, is affected by the low count of female parasites or the absence of microfilaremia, which is a limitation in the use of serological techniques. This is why new techniques are used, such as PCR, which has been used for thirty years. This technique allows the disease to be detected even in cases that do not present microfilaremia or a high count of females, and also allows the identification of the species. of the parasite, which allows a timely action of the doctor to provide the treatment; costs are the main limitation of this technique. Serological techniques will continue to advance, but the use of PCR is highly recommended because it provides reliable information, as long as the procedures are carried out correctly, avoiding human error. | es_ES |

| es_ES |
