Introduction: Percutaneous tracheostomy is a technique performed at the foot of the bed, which tries to minimize the complications of prolonged intubation and the morbidity of open tracheostomy. Objective: "To determine the frequent respiratory complications associated with percutaneous tracheotomy, in older adults in the intensive care area of the IESS Hospital General Babahoyo." Methods: A qualitative and quantitative, non-experimental, documentary, descriptive cross-sectional methodology is used, using direct observation and clinical history as techniques. Results: 15 patients were included. The average age was 60 to 65 years 47%, the male sex predominated 56%, of the 15 patients 12 underwent percutaneous tracheotomy 73%, the reason for admission to the ICU was expected, they received prolonged mechanical ventilation 44%, the difficulty 33% were due to obesity, the days in the ICU were 7 to 10 days, immediate complications were minor bleeding 33%, cannula obstruction 27%, late complications 46% were due to infection in the surgical site in the ICU, 27% obstruction premature cannula, 17% presented changes or difficulties in the voice after decannulation, 80% of the patients were decannulated and 80% received physiotherapy with bronchial hygiene technique. They present respiratory complication in the applied techniques. Conclusion: Percutaneous tracheotomy showed confidence in its application, although despite the incidence of the procedure, its effectiveness together with respiratory therapy is favorable.es_ES
