This paper presents a bibliographic analysis of bovine encephalitis caused by bovine herpesvirus type 5 (BHV-5), which is a very invasive pathology of the central nervous system of ruminants, especially cattle. It is acute, occurs in outbreaks and is also very lethal, although some animals may survive. The etiological agent belongs to the genus Varicellovirus, family Herpesviridae and subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae, a double-stranded DNA virus with an envelope capable of remaining latent in hosts resistant to infection. The disease is characterized by non-suppurative encephalitis and necrosis of the cerebral cortex, accompanied by neurological disorders. The most frequent symptomatology is the presence of motor incoordination, eventual circling, flank licking, prostration and death. The severity of the clinical course, and the impact on the cattle production chain, encourage us to review the research reports on the subject in order to understand and prevent this highly fatal pathology. This study aims to analyze the etiology, clinical and epidemiological signs, diagnosis, and control measures of encephalitis caused by bovine alphaherpesvirus type 5 (BoHV-5).es_ES
